Independent School District #480 offers a wide variety of community education programs and services, most of which are held at the Rolf Olsen Center (the ROC) and the Onamia Lions Community Center (the LCC). COMPUTER CLASSES

The following classes are taught by Sue Duff-Erkel, an Onamia resident and certified technical trainer with 11 years experience as an Information Technology Trainer specializing in Windows OS and Microsoft Office products. Registration deadlines for all of these classes are one week prior to the first class.

Date: Thursday, Nov 2 and Thursday, Nov 9                                 Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.                  Place: ROC Computer Lab

Cost: $28 for registration plus $5 payable to instructor for booklet                                      Register by: Oct 26

This class is for the person who is looking for a little more from their computer. We will learn how to move and resize a window, how to open and arrange multiple program windows for easier use, change the background and screen saver, set the mouse for your personal click speed, create a basic Word document and save it to a file. Create a folder. Learn how to use the recycle bin restore deleted items and a lot more.

This class is a total of 4 hours split into 2 Ð 2 hour sessions.

What's the buzz about? If you've never used the internet, have no idea how you would use it or just want to learn how to find things easier, come and learn about the internet, what to look for in an internet provider, how to search the web and actually find what you are looking for, use wild cards in searching the internet, how to use favorites, adding a favorite and managing your favorites. What's the difference between the internet and World Wide Web?

Learn the basics of how to create, address (To CC or BCC which one to use and why) and send email messages, how to open and read messages and how to manage your mailbox We will be using an internet email account during class.

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY CLASSES

 

Defensive Driving, Initial 8-hour Course

Instructor: Sgt. Kurt Mowers                    Date: Monday, Nov 20 & Tuesday, Nov 21                    Time: 5:30-9:30 p.m.

Place: ROC Community Education Classroom              Fee: $20               Register by: Nov 13

                  This 8-hour Initial Defensive Driving Course, taught by Minnesota State Trooper Kurt Mowers, is open to everyone and is especially designed for those 55 and over who want to improve their driving techniques while receiving a 10% discount on automotive insurance. Registration with payment is required by the deadline. No refunds.

 



Beginning Rosemaling

Instructor: Meri Taylor                Place: ROC Great Room            Fee: $40 for one session, $75 for two sessions              

Session I: Tuesday, Oct 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.                   Register for Session I by October 17

Session II: Saturday, Nov 4, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.                Register for Session II by October 30

Learn the basics of rosemaling, a Norwegian folk art. Participants will learn wood prep, the importance of good brushes, stroke work, color theory, and will complete a finished product just in time for the holidays!  Upon registering, you will receive a materials list of things you will need to bring to the first class.  You will also need to purchase the wood for the project from the instructor the first night. Coffee will be provided; you should bring a bag lunch.

 

Cooking with John Stenback

Back by popular demand, renowned area chef and former Headquarters Lodge owner John Stenback will present new recipes, chef tips, and restaurant tricks in a hands-on learning environment.  Each class is limited to 10 students, so register as soon as possible.  And be sure to bring your appetite to class!

Join John as he shares secrets of the uncommonly seductive and raucous cuisine of the Cajuns. Learn how to stimulate multiple taste points on the tongue simultaneously as you cook up a gumbo and prepare the Acadian version of paella - jambalaya. Sing, dance, cook. Music included.

 

Holiday Cookie Sampling and Recipe Exchange

Date: Monday, December 11                    Time: 6:30 p.m.               Place:  ROC Great Room

Fee: $5 for cookie recipe booklet          Organizers: Cyndy Rudolph & Norma Thompson

                  Has your repertoire of holiday cookies become a little stale? Are you looking for new cookie ideas? Or perhaps you have the perfect holiday cookie that you'd love to share with others.  In either case, this class is for you. Each participant will need to bring at least 2-dozen of one type of holiday cookie. In exchange, you'll be able to taste everyone else's cookies AND take home a booklet with all the recipes.  Coffee and tea will be provided.

 

World War II in Europe: The Battle of the Bulge: The Fight for St. Vith and the American Center

Instructor: John Varner, Superintendent                              Date: Tuesday, Nov 28                Time: 7:00 p.m.

Place: ROC Community Education Classroom              Fee: $5                                    Register by: November 28

This presentation is the second of three sessions on the history of the Battle of the Bulge.  The Fight for St. Vith and the American Center will describe in detail the German plan of attack in the central portion of the battle as well as the response of the American forces to the sudden onslaught.  The class will reveal the problems encountered by the 106th Infantry Division as it became surrounded as well as the movement, deployment, and defensive strategy of the 7th Armored Division and assorted units rushed to plug the gap in the center of the battle. 

 

 

 

CLASSES and ACTIVITIES JUST FOR YOUTH


Kids in the Kitchen: Christmas Food Fun for 3rd, 4th & 5th Graders

Instructor: Kathy Faust                Date: Tues, Dec 12 and Thurs, Dec 14                                Time: 3:15-4:30

Place: Onamia High School, Cafeteria                                 Fee: $5 for one night, $8 for both nights 

In this after-school class, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students will learn how to make some fun and delicious Christmas snacks. This class is limited to 15 students, so register as soon as possible!

 

Girl Scouts Halloween Party for Area Youth

Saturday, Oct 28, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.   Place: LCC Gym            Free for all area youth ages 2 to 12!!

The Onamia-area Girl Scouts are sponsoring a community Halloween party for all kids ages 2 to 12 years old at the Lions Community Center. Activities will include: Face Painting, Bean Bag Toss, Bingo, Pumpkin Carving (bring your own pumpkin or purchase one from the Girl Scouts for $2; carving tools and stencils will be provided), a Costume Contest (non-violent costumes only!), Cupcake Walk, and more.  Treat bags will be handed out while supplies last.  There is no cost for this event, but please bring a canned/boxed non-perishable food item for the Food Shelf.  This will be a fun event for the whole family to enjoy! An adult must accompany kids aged 2 to 10.

 

 

 

ONGOING ACTIVITIES IN THE LIONS COMMUNITY CENTER

¯       Onamia Fitness Center: The Onamia Fitness Center is located in the Lions Community Center. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Membership fees range from $15 per month for students and seniors 65 and older to $25 per month for individuals and $45 for families.  The fitness center is also part of the reimbursement programs offered by Medica, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and UCare.

 

¯       Co-ed Volleyball: Monday Evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m.: Cost: $2 per person for non-members (or buy a 10-punch card for $15)/Free for Onamia Fitness Center members.  Players warm up from 6:30 to 6:45, with games beginning promptly thereafter.  New players are always welcome so stop by and check it out Ð and bring your own ball if you have one.

 

¯       Pickleball: Wednesday Evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m.: Cost: $2 per person for non-members (or buy a 10-punch card for $15)/Free for Onamia Fitness Center members: Come and play the exciting game that is a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton.  Played by 2 or 4 people on a badminton-sized court, pickleball uses wood racquets and a plastic, poly baseball with holes.  All ages are welcome Ð come as often as you like! No experience necessary. 

 

¯       Open Gym: Saturday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.: Suggested donation: $2 per person, $5 per family: Beginning in October, the LCC gym will be open on Saturday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.  And we're always looking for volunteers to help out with Open Gym, so contact us if you're interested!

Parents of Teenage Drivers: Understanding Youth Risk

Monday, Nov 27, 6:00-6:45 p.m.                         Place: ROC Community Education Room                                    FREE

                  Do you have a teenager who is at or approaching driving age? Do you worry about the risks your teen faces behind the wheel? Are you perplexed by insurance rates? This free workshop, presented by Kasandra Wiederholt from Mille Lacs County Public Health and others, will cover the following topics: the Minnesota Graduated License, Risk Situations and Teen Responsibilities, 2006 Insurance Rates for Teens, and the ways in which Parent Involvement is essential to the development of safe driving skills for teens.

 

Onamia Fitness Center (OFC) Anniversary Open House

                  Join us in celebrating our first anniversary of making Onamia a more fit community.  During the open house, you'll be able to try out the equipment, get your membership questions answered, and maybe even win a door prize!

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

The Onamia School District offers a variety of Early Childhood Family Education programs for children from birth to kindergarten age and their parents. The ECFE program is located in the Rolf Olsen Center.  For a complete schedule of fall ECFE classes and activities, call the ECFE office at (320) 532-4177 Ext. 3.

á          ECFE Kid stuff Rummage Sale: Thursday, Nov 9, noon to 8:00 p.m.

                  The Onamia ECFE staff and Advisory Council will be sponsoring a Kid stuff Rummage Sale in the Rolf Olsen Center's Great Room. Items for sale will include children's books, toys, CDs, videos, DVDs, and clothing. A Bake Sale will also be held. Everyone is welcome!

                  Donations of children's items in good-to-excellent condition will be gratefully accepted beginning October 23.  For more information about the Kid stuff Sale or to donate objects, call the ECFE Center at (320) 532-4177, Ext. 3.

 

Kids Count Ð After School "Latchkey'' Child Care Program

Onamia Elementary is very pleased to be starting its second year with an after school childcare program for our students.  We believe we provide a safe and nurturing environment for your child.  Children have time for indoor and outdoor play, reading, special arts and crafts, games, and computer.  A snack is provided at no cost.  We will be open for your convenience from 3:00-6:00 every day school is in session for $5 per night.  Parents purchase a punch card in advance and then can use it whenever they wish.  Registration forms can be picked up in the elementary office. Guy Kokesh Area Learning Center (ALC)

The Rolf Olson Center's ALC is available to anyone aged 16 and older who wants to earn a high school diploma, prepare for the GED test, use computers and/or the Internet, and/or use the resources in the career center. Student hours are flexible and varied, and staff is committed to students' success. Please feel free to call the ALC for additional information: 532-4423, Ext. 2.

 

 

Military History Discussion Group

Do you have an avid interest in military history? If so, come and share your interest with other people in a discussion of and study group focusing on this subject.  We'll cover future meeting dates, topics, discussion format, and ideas to make the group responsive to participants' ideas and suggestions.
