Boyd, Beaulieu charged with murder

Charges were filed against Aaron James Beaulieu, 22, and Joshua Simon Boyd, 20, in Mille Lacs County District Court on July 27. The Onamia men are suspected of killing William Anthony Nickaboine, 19, also of Onamia.

Rights commission honors 4

The Mille Lacs Area Human Rights Commission held their fifth annual awards luncheon on July 21.
The Human Rights Commission was created in the Mille Lacs area in March of 2005.
In the past, the commission has annually honored three people for achievements and outstanding performance in the field of human rights, specifically those who stand against prejudice and violence, and who promote human rights.

In his wheelchair, Howard Neeham moves around Onamia with ease. He can be found anywhere from the healing gardens at Mille Lacs Health System to the Rolf Olsen Center, or the Lions Community Center where he exercises.

Mille Lacs County - Rural issues at the table

At their July 20 meeting, Mille Lacs County commissioners heard from Dan Larson of the Minnesota Rural Counties Caucus, which lobbies on behalf of rural counties.
After a brief presentation, Larson asked commissioners to suggest issues he should be working on.
Commissioner Phil Peterson said he’d like to see the state once again allow counties to rescind the state building code.

City of Wahkon - The great chicken debate

“I live in the country,” Wahkon resident Diane Halcomb told the city council on July 19. “I want to have chickens.”
Karrie Roeschlein, city clerk, received a letter of complaint on June 21. The letter stated that Halcomb was raising chickens in her yard.

Carlsona fire probe continues

Deputy state fire marshal Mark Germain stated last week that the investigation into the Carlsona Beach Supper Club fire on April 26 “is still on going.” The investigation of TJ’s on the Lake is not finished yet either, he added.

Woman allegedly harbored fugitives

According to a complaint filed in Mille Lacs County District Court, on or about June, 29, 2010, Tribal Police were dispatched to the intersection of Wakadaaki Drive and Zhingwaak Drive for a one vehicle rollover. Officers were told that Donovan Lee Davis, had been the driver of the vehicle but was no longer at the scene.

Store robbed, woman charged

Clarilyn Nevon Anderson, also known as Carla Anderson, 55, was charged with five counts of theft after a long investigation indicated that she had stolen about $209,000 from Teals Market in Isle.

Charges filed in Stevens Road crash

Ronald Duane Lensegrav, 72, of Buffalo, was arrested on July 16 after he crashed his car on a curve on Stevens Road between Wahkon and Onamia.
A Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the scene of the accident  just after 6 p.m. and found Lensegrav leaning against a severely damaged vehicle.
The officer asked Lensegrav if he had been driving the vehicle, and Lensegrav admitted he had.

Writing her own future

Weyaus is involved in the Upward Bound program through Central Lakes College. This organization helps students succeed both in school and at life in general.
In the Upward Bound summer program, students are placed at workplaces according to their skills and abilities. Weyaus was placed at the St. Cloud Times newspaper for a summer internship.

Two arrested for murder

Murder charges were expected to be filed on Tuesday, July 27, against Joshua Boyd, 20, and Aaron Beaulieu, 22. The two men were arrested after a burned body was found and identified as that of William Anthony Nickaboine, 19, of Onamia.

Onamia man missing for 5 days

William Anthony Nickaboine, 19, of Onamia has been missing since July 17, according to his girlfriend. She last saw Nickaboine sitting on her neighbor's stoop on Gabeshi Lane. She talked to him before she went to bed a little after 4 a.m. She said he was relaxed and having fun. "He said he'd come home later," she said. He didn't.

Absolutely gourdgeous

Anything can inspire the gourd girls. A barn on a hill, a bird in a bush, a child’s rattle, a snowman, a sewing kit, a basket, an apple — it doesn’t matter. Dorothy Klar and her daughter Tara, and Dorothy’s sister Carol Danielson, will either put it on a gourd, or turn a gourd into it.
“Gourds talk to us,” Tara said. “They say, ‘Hey, look at me! I’m a chubby little snowman!’”
