County mirrors state in primary contest

In Mille Lacs County 2,250 out of 14,512 registered voters went to the polls for the Aug. 10 primary election. That figures to about 15 1/2 percent voter turnout. According to Mille Lacs County Auditor, Phil Thompson, Mille Lacs County matched the state with voter turnout.

City of Onamia - ‘It’s rancid with garbage’

Residents of the Lakeside Apartments have been evicted, but that doesn’t mean the property is no longer a hazard.
Police Chief Bob Matzke told the Onamia City Council on Aug. 11 that the building is not secure and could still be a fire hazard or a danger to children.
“I just think it’s a magnet for undesirable things to happen,” Matzke said.
He told the council the building is in foreclosure, and the owners, a bank in Miami, have been unsuccessful at finding a local realtor to manage the property.

Nothing to complain about

The Wahkon City Council accepted the resignation of Bob Stone, the chair of the Wahkon Area Vision Effusion, at their regular monthly meeting on Aug. 9.

Stone said he was resigning for medical reasons in a letter to the council, saying the position requires full commitment with a strong aggressive drive.

Four counts against Onamia area man

According to a felony complaint filed in Mille Lacs County District Court, Samuel Charles Holmes, 22, of Onamia, was charged with one count of burglary in the second degree, one count of theft of property or services not more than $500 in value, one count of criminal damage to property in the fourth degree and one count of trespassing.

A fair to remember

Fair to partly cloudy — and then some.

Rain and high winds rocked the fairgrounds in Princeton Aug. 12 and 13. Thunderstorms rolled through both days, resulting in the cancellation of the tractor pull on Thursday, Aug. 12, and the stock car races on Friday, Aug. 13.

Mille Lacs Band hosts traditional powwow

American Indian dancers in brightly colored regalia will take part in traditional dancing and drum ceremonies during the 44th Annual Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Powwow on Aug. 20-22. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Band’s powwow grounds located two miles north of Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

New and old attractions at Mille Lacs County Fair

The Mille Lacs County Fair, held in Princeton from Aug. 12 to Aug. 15, is a mixture of old and new — with some new and improved versions of old favorites.
One big change is the absence of the old premium book sent out as an insert in the local papers. Those interested in entering one of the many contests need to go to the website, www.millelacscountyfair.com.

After the storm, help arrives

After the tornado in Wadena, MLHS Employee Maria Greenwaldt, LPN and her daughter Sheri Greenwaldt, ambulance volunteer, helped to clean up the damage.
On June 17, areas of Wadena and Ottertail counties were hit by tornados. The worst one was an EF-4 that went through the southeast part of Wadena leaving in its wake destruction 1.1 miles wide by 10 miles long.

‘Small places have big hearts’ - Mary's March

Over 160 runners and walkers raised money for childhood cancer research at Mary’s March in honor of Mary Virnig, an Onamia native who has been battling cancer for the last four years. The 5k run/walk began and ended at Onamia School, with games, a dunk tank, and a silent auction.

Casinos hire advertising director

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s Corporate Commission, along with Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley, are pleased to announce the hiring of Jim Orr as director of advertising and brand strategy. Orr will lead Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley’s advertising efforts and will be responsible for creating and maintaining Grand Casino’s brand strategy.

Local offices up for grabs

Many local city council and school board seats are up for election this November. The deadline to file for those seats is Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Isle has four seats up for election this November, including council seats held by Kristy Kaufmann, Doug Rutt and Dennis Trombley. Rodney Schultz’s mayor position is up for election as well. No one has filed thus far. Candidates can file for a seat at the Isle City Hall.

This comment describes just one of the important needs that were met by the East Central Energy (ECE) Operation Round Up (ORU) Trust in the recent summer grant cycle. The Trust assisted nine local organizations with funds totaling $17,856.

Mille Lacs Band June donations

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe donated $50,058 in monetary and in-kind contributions to a variety of nonprofit organizations and other charitable causes in May. Every month the Band contributes to community programs in Minnesota and nationwide. So far in 2010, the Band has donated a total of $342,524.

Onamia Civic announces fall fest, other programs

An Autumn Fest will be one of three new programs for the Onamia Area Civic Association agenda this fall. The new event, being held at the Holy Cross/Crosier grounds, will include a chili cookoff, activities for kids, a 5K event and farmers market.
At a Civic meeting held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Rolf Olsen Center, board member Greta Sorvik announced the event will be held Sept. 18 and will also include a breakfast by Bethany Lutheran Church and dinner by Holy Cross Church.

Criminal sexual conduct arrest made

James Gregory Nickaboine, 45, was arrested on Aug. 1 after a Mille Lacs Tribal Police officer was dispatched to Nay Ah Shing Drive on a report of a possible criminal sexual conduct offense.

According to the complaint filed in the Mille Lacs County District Court, the roommate of the alleged victim of the offense was following Nickaboine in her car when she called the police.

Mille Lacs County - Fishhouse park permit granted

Dennis Goplen, an applicant for a dead storage fishhouse park permit, chose not to respond to concerns voiced by a neighbor, Bruce Milton.
The Mille Lacs County Board gave him the permit anyway, voting 3-0 in favor of the permit, which had been recommended by the Planning Commission.
