City of Onamia - ‘It’s rancid with garbage’
Police Chief Bob Matzke told the Onamia City Council on Aug. 11 that the building is not secure and could still be a fire hazard or a danger to children.
“I just think it’s a magnet for undesirable things to happen,” Matzke said.
He told the council the building is in foreclosure, and the owners, a bank in Miami, have been unsuccessful at finding a local realtor to manage the property.
Nothing to complain about
The Wahkon City Council accepted the resignation of Bob Stone, the chair of the Wahkon Area Vision Effusion, at their regular monthly meeting on Aug. 9.
Stone said he was resigning for medical reasons in a letter to the council, saying the position requires full commitment with a strong aggressive drive.

The Mille Lacs County Fair, held in Princeton from Aug. 12 to Aug. 15, is a mixture of old and new — with some new and improved versions of old favorites.
One big change is the absence of the old premium book sent out as an insert in the local papers. Those interested in entering one of the many contests need to go to the website, www.millelacscountyfair.com.
After the storm, help arrives
On June 17, areas of Wadena and Ottertail counties were hit by tornados. The worst one was an EF-4 that went through the southeast part of Wadena leaving in its wake destruction 1.1 miles wide by 10 miles long.
‘Small places have big hearts’ - Mary's March
Over 160 runners and walkers raised money for childhood cancer research at Mary’s March in honor of Mary Virnig, an Onamia native who has been battling cancer for the last four years. The 5k run/walk began and ended at Onamia School, with games, a dunk tank, and a silent auction.

Isle has four seats up for election this November, including council seats held by Kristy Kaufmann, Doug Rutt and Dennis Trombley. Rodney Schultz’s mayor position is up for election as well. No one has filed thus far. Candidates can file for a seat at the Isle City Hall.
Operation Round Up grants

This comment describes just one of the important needs that were met by the East Central Energy (ECE) Operation Round Up (ORU) Trust in the recent summer grant cycle. The Trust assisted nine local organizations with funds totaling $17,856.

At a Civic meeting held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Rolf Olsen Center, board member Greta Sorvik announced the event will be held Sept. 18 and will also include a breakfast by Bethany Lutheran Church and dinner by Holy Cross Church.

Criminal sexual conduct arrest made
James Gregory Nickaboine, 45, was arrested on Aug. 1 after a Mille Lacs Tribal Police officer was dispatched to Nay Ah Shing Drive on a report of a possible criminal sexual conduct offense.
According to the complaint filed in the Mille Lacs County District Court, the roommate of the alleged victim of the offense was following Nickaboine in her car when she called the police.
Mille Lacs County - Fishhouse park permit granted
Dennis Goplen, an applicant for a dead storage fishhouse park permit, chose not to respond to concerns voiced by a neighbor, Bruce Milton.
The Mille Lacs County Board gave him the permit anyway, voting 3-0 in favor of the permit, which had been recommended by the Planning Commission.
