Moonlight Snowshoeing Expedition: Remembering
Zebulon Pike
James L. Cummings -Park Naturalist and Richard M. Rothaus - St. Cloud State Professor
discussed Zebulon Pike.
Lewis and Clark went from St. Louis West. Zebulon Pike went
north. He was suppose to find the headwaters of the Misssippi and
make peace between the Ojibwe and Dakota. He did not accomplish
either, although he did name a different headwater for the Misssippi.
His trip was poorly funded. Zebulon had no experience
either - starting when he was 26 years old. All of his men
survived the long and cold winter expedition.
Pike had journal that he wrote in every night. This is
available in many public libraries in Minnesota.

After this we went snowshoeing. (Zebulon Pike did not use
snowshoes)
