Emailing Politicians

More people have become involved in politics through the use of email. This makes it harder for politicians to keep up their correspondence. Since there is much more email than letters on paper, some politicians choose not to read or respond to emails. Some people think that politicians should pay attention to messages from all sources, including email. Should politicians ignore email messages?

Some politicians prefer to use and respond to US Mail, or other mail carriers, (AKA snail mail) rather than email. Emails can often be read and responded to faster than letters printed on paper. An email does not waste paper or postage, but if the receiver wishes to have a hard copy, it can be printed. For many people, it is easier to send an email instead of printing, signing, addressing, and mailing a letter. For the reasons that email is quick and efficient, politicians should use email.

Some may say the email they get is not worthwhile. Emails can easily be sorted by the importance to the reader based on the subject, sender and date. With a "Spam" filter, junk email can be eliminated, and not even show up in the inbox. All other junk-mail messages can easily be deleted. For example, a person can tell whether the email has been forwarded, or sent specifically to him/her. By easily sorting out the messages, email is very worthwhile and consumes little of the politician's time. Because email can be quickly sorted, politicians should look at it.

Some people say that email sources are not reliable or traceable. With the sender leaving his/her full name, address, phone number, and/or some other way he/she can be reached, the recipient can verify emails of their source. Like the US Mail, and other mail carriers, the email contains the date and the server it was sent from (viewable in the full header). If the email does not contain valid identification from the sender, it can be quickly and easily deleted, or dealt with. Therefore, politicians should use email since email sources can be reliable and if needed, verified by another form of communication.

Thus, email can be a quick and efficient tool for politicians and the people they represent to communicate. Junk email can be eliminated quickly, enabling the politician to make better use of time. Senders should remember to email appropriately including their full name, address, phone number, and a relevant topic. With this information, all emails should be read and responded to, unless the reader regards the email as insignificant.
